In June 2022 after we recorded this interview with Peter, the varroa mite was detected in surveillance hives in Port Newcastle in NSW. Since that time, the NSW Department of Primary Industries is working with beekeepers across the state to identify infested hives and carry out containment and control activities. In many cases, this includes the destruction of the affected bees. The movement of hives and bees is currently restricted in NSW. If you keep bees at home and haven't already done so, please contact the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881 on what you need to do to help contain this spread.
