The Martinez first appeared as a variation on a Manhattan in an 1884 cocktail book. It became a popular cocktail in its own right from 1887 when it appeared in celebrated bartender Jerry Thomas' Bartenders Guide.
At first glance it's a sweet martini, but the dryness of the maraschino liqueur and bitters creates a perfectly balanced cocktail.
